Airports Authority of India came into existence on 1st April, 1995 after the amalgamation of two authorities namely National Airports Authority and International Airports Authority of India. AAI works under the ministry of civil aviation which is responsible for management of most of the airports of country. Need of merger arises due to the implementation of a single organization that is trusted with the responsibility of maintaining and upgrading civil aviation infrastructure both in air and on ground. Moreover it is responsible for management of total 125 airports including 81 domestic airports, 8 custom airports, 11 international airports and 27 civil enclaves at defense airfields. It covers around 2.8 million square nautical miles of airspace for its navigation services.
The primary functions of Airports Authority of India include:
- Management, construction and modification of passenger terminals.
- Provide passenger facility and information system at terminals.
- Management and development of cargo terminals at domestic as well as international airport.
- Maintenance and development of international and domestic airports.
- Provides visual aids, communication and navigation aids etc.
Apart from the mentioned services it also provides assistance in maintaining and developing passenger terminals, cargo terminals, infrastructure which includes runways, taxiways and apron. Air navigation services include the management of different airlines to manage air traffic efficiently with the help of latest technologies and skilled staff. Security systems are also enhanced after the incident of 9/11 for sake of public and their smooth travel. Implementation of aerodrome facilities is also managed by this body for good experience of travelers. Extension of runways is also taking place in order to accommodate larger flights like Boeing 737-800. AAI falls under the Miniratna-I CPSE category.
AAI offers various posts for airport staff which includes senior assistant in nursing, senior assistant electronics, official language, mechanical and auto electrician, junior executive in airport operations, IT, civil engineering, electrical engineering, fire services, air traffic controller and human resource. In order to upgrade its services AAI needs qualified persons to fill the vacancies and enhance performance. For junior executive pay scale ranges from Rs. 16400 – Rs. 40500. Candidates are notified with the help of various mediums like newspaper and internet. Anyone who is eligible for a certain post can apply by filling the application form along with the application fee. A written test is held for all recruitments before selection of suitable candidates.
